3rd Annual Revelstoke Reunion

For the past three years a group of us that hung out in Revelstoke, Canada have met up back here in New Zealand for a weekend get together. This year we were in Ohau. We even had Jared all the way from Clevland, Ohio and Ben from Australia join us. We skied the first day, but due to not great snow conditions we decided to explore up the valley the next day. It was well worth it

Okarito – Beaches, Mountains and Sunsets

Last week I had the pleasure of heading to the west Coast of the South Island with a friend to photograph the Okarito Lodge and landscapes of the beautiful surroundings. Laura at Okarito Lodge was an awesome host showing us around the bush walks and taking us kayaking. I highly recommend checking it out if you want a relaxing time away. Here are some outtakes from the road trip.

Indonesia

Concentrating on chasing winters throughout my life meant that Indonesia was my first island holiday destination. There for three and a half weeks I traveled to Bali, the Gilli Islands and Lombok. I met lots of awesome new people during my travels, both locals and fellow tourists. These photos are some of what I saw during my travels as I snorkeled, surfed, partied, sunbathed, hiked and of course photographed my way around the place.

Tour New Zealand – North

Over the Christmas break I took off on a road trip to the North Island of New Zealand with my friend Ben. Having spent most of my life chasing winters it was an eye opener to see all of the amazing beaches up north.
We met loads of super friendly people both travelers and locals, who helped us along the way and gave us a bed to give us a break from our tents when we needed it. Thanks to Abby and Dan for hooking us up an awesome place for New Year and Ken, Cam and family in Opotiki.
We scored some some good surf at the start of the trip and as the swell dropped off we moved onto doing more mountain biking. If you’re from the south Island and haven’t explored the north during summer I couldn’t recommend it enough!

World Heli Challenge 2013

MICKEY-ROSS-CANON

Over the previous 2 weeks I had the privilege to compete in The photographer shootout during the World Heli Challenge.

A two week long event, it consists of two on snow heli days and a bunch more activities with an awesome international and local crew of athletes and filmers. Above is my overall Heli challenge entry and below are my entries into the other categories. +  a bunch more photos I shot over the two weeks. I’m stoked that I won 3 photo catergories, The Canon Overall, the freestyle day and the Wanaka Lifestyle award.

Unfortunately the Big Mountain day didn’t run this year due to, weather and snow conditions. Check out the rest of the photos and films on the World Heli Challenge website and their facebook page.

The White House

Since the first time I visited the White House I’ve always wanted to photograph inside the restaurant. Currently I have two good friends working there, Tania who you see here and Gus who is one of the Chefs. With all the new bars and restaurants in Wanaka, it’s great to have a place that has a little more history and soul. The White House truly is the funkiest of fine dining establishments in Wanaka. Thanks to Tania for helping me out and to the White House for letting me photograph in the restaurant.

Land of Colour and Life – Mexico

Some photos from my week long adventure in Mexico while I was visting my friend Eduardo. Eduardo was an amazing guide taking me to places I would never think to go as a tourist. I was amazed at the friendly nature of all the Mexicans. I felt a little invasive with my camera but realised after a while that most people actually liked getting photos taken. We spent the first couple of days in Gualarahara and then headed to the coast where we stayed in San Blas and then headed down to the tourist spot Puerto Vallarta for some relax and party time and then back to Gualarahara. That’s me above looking relaxed after a few of these:

This guy was collecting foreign notes and coins but we didn’t have any to give him. Eduardo and him worked out he used to work for Eduardos grandmother.

Portland –> Tahoe –> Coachella

After spending a year and a half in Revelstoke, BC Canada I was sad to say goodbye to all the amazing people and places that had filled that time. Although at the same time I was excited about the next month of adventure which would take me down the west coast of the United States, inland to Tahoe and down to the Music festival Coachella. ( and later to Mexico and home.. photos to come )

The following photos are some random images I captured during the trip and include photos from Portland, Oregon, the coast of California and sights from Coachella. Wez and I were lucky enough to be hooked up by a friend and Portland local – Colleen, who organized for us to crash with her friend Katherine. She was nice enough to let two strange Kiwis into her apartment and show us around Portland even though she had never met us. Portland is a sweet city!

From there it was on to Tahoe to hang out with old college friends and attend a college party. Thanks Kieth for the place to stay. After Tahoe we checked out San Fran, crashed in the van in AAArons driveway, picked up Troy in LA, rode some roller coasters and headed to Coachella to meet up with the Revychella crew who had come down from Revelstoke. Good times.

We just hit up a couple of days camping up Lake Revelstoke towards Mica Dam at Goldstream. Although there are no ski pics, we did get a couple of awesome days touring, finding some terrain that will need to be sessioned some more. Good food, skiing and peeps and a great fire. (Fire photos are fun)

A different kind of Asulkan

My third trip to the Asulkan Cabin was a different one. Without the usual bottomless powder and some awesome stability we took the opportunity to Explore. We did the Jupiter Traverse which includes Caster, Pollux and Leda peaks and ends in the Thorington descent. Thanks to the crew for another awesome mission into Rogers! Oh and I heard from some swiss guy that Laura Flannery slayed Forever Young Couloir! Will miss you Laura, safe travels.

Balu Pass and Beyond

Even though Rory didn’t keep to the contracted leaving time (two hours late) haha… yesterday was still and epic tour in Rogers Pass with Keith, Rory and a couple more. We toured straight up Balu Pass and then carried on behind and skied down to the highway. I’ve not been getting out touring too much lately and am not very tour fit, so was wrecked by the end of the day. Here are some photos from the journey. Merry Christmas people.

One Last Fling with Winter

A quick edit of our time at Asulkan Cabin. Sorry the video quality is not great but we were concentrating on the skiing!

About three weeks ago I lucked out and got a spot for three days of touring at the Asulkan Cabin in Rogers Pass. We had aspirations of skiing some chutes and gaining some peaks but mother nature had other ideas for us. It snowed the whole time we were there which made avalanche conditions pretty sketchy. We had to stick to the trees on some low angle terrain to make sure we were all safe, at some points this was a little frustrating as there was almost too much snow for some descents. One day the Pass road was closed with bombing going on all around to clear the highway which was a little disconcerting. Although we didn’t get to ski some lines we wanted to we weren’t complaining about getting some more super deep days in for the season!

drive by tourism usa

With not much time to burn as we had some km’s (and time) to kill I took a few snaps of the sites I saw as I drove from Revelstoke B.C to Tahoe and back again via the California coast. Nearly all we shot from the passenger seat.

kicking it

Five of us from Revelstoke swapped out our Season passes for a couple of day passes at Kicking Horse resort. (Joined by three more the second day) We were all set with our token Canadian , telemarker, girl, snowboarder, and ski racer. All being Kicking Horse virgins it took some time to find the goods but with a bit of hiking Kicking Horse has some  sweet in bounds terrain. (85 inbounds chutes they claim) After pulling out the terrain map and asking locals where to go a few times we decided we all looked like a bunch of punters with day passes hanging off our jackets so we decided we would keep a tally, not of gnar points but day passer points. Rory Camm was awarded the ultimate day passer award for asking an angry local where the groomed runs are at the top of a particularly gnarly hike.

Day Passer Crew minus a few.

Kicking Horse apparently has the highest Restaurant in Canada. There she goes.

Newly opened Super Bowl with Terminator 2 Peak has some nice in bounds terrain and some even better slack country terrain beyond the ropes. With 85 cm falling in the previous week avo conditions were a bit dodgy so we found some more mellow terrain so as not get caught in another one of these – check below.

The snow and skiing was sweet, with the bowls leading into nicely gladed tress with sweet pow the whole way down.

210 Mulock

210 Mulock. Leslie, Britt, Sean, Mickey..Here is just one day of skiing at the hill for us. Sorry more helmet cam footage! have been planning on doing some real filming but when the pow is this good…… footage from Sean and I of one day skiing at Revelstoke Ski Resort featuring the ski bum team from 210 Mulock st. Britt’s cousin and friends were also visiting so the house was pretty full and hectic in the morning. Also did a few runs with Mr Rory Camm. Sorry no footage of Britt shredding on her board. Britt get with the program and get a helmet cam like the rest of Revelstoke!.. haha.

Red

Just arrived back from a good trip to Red Resort in Rossland B.C Travelled down there with Si Reeves and Rory Camm. The mess above is the result of a rock falling on my head about 10 seconds after I took the photo below. Was sitting under a cliff which was thawing out in the sun when I got one right in the head. At first I didn’t think the damage was too bad but then the blood started to pour out the front of my hat. It bled quite a lot for a couple of minutes but luckily it stopped pretty fast. Ended up with 5 stitches so all patched up now.

After getting hooked up a sweet condo for the first couple of nights Rory’s friend had us to stay at his even better ski house in Rossland.

Conditions were a little challenging as it had rained a bit before we arrived but got better after 10-15cm fell after the second day.

Mr Rory Camm.

Si Reeves shredding in the trees and chilling below.

stopped snowing

So it finally stopped snowing! yay? anyway it was good to have a nice clear day to go out and take some pics. Has warmed up so the bottom of the mountain is now pretty crusty but the top is sweet. Avalanche conditions are pretty bad right now so I went out with Sean and Leslie my flatmates to take some pow shots in some mellow terrain. Below are some shots from the day, loving my camera for stills!  Go Nikon haha.

scoping lines.

Leslie took the camera and snapped some pics of me, always nice to get in front of the lens!

Going huge!

Heading to Rossland and Red Mountain to take some pics. More snow coming. Should be good times!

been snowing..

Due to there being so much snow and therefore having to ski all the time I have not been updating the blog. I did make a couple of Videos, one from pow skiing and christmas and one of the Freeskiing world tour event here in Revelstoke. My friend and flatmate Sean competed so made an edit combining his helmet cam footage and video I took with my Nikon… a bit shaky but have since acquired a new video head which should make things a little easier. I want to film some more but that means not skiing! haha the great dilemma I face. I also haven’t taken many still shots of skiing for this reason, but Rory, Si and I are going on a bit of a roady to Rossland which will encourage me to

take some photos. The weather has warmed a little in the last day, still dumping!! snow up on the mountain but raining in town. See photos above….

Have been out for a couple days skiing with him, but mostly we’re waiting for avo conditions to settle and for more snow to come (if that makes sense?) Although there is still some really good skiing to be had if you look for it a little. Thought I’d post a couple of snaps in the mean time….

Sean shredding some pow

Pow!

Pow Pow!… Conditions here in Revelstoke have, in the last 5 days gone from pretty average to epic! Apparently it happens fast around here. During the last week I’ve attempted to explore the mountain and might of seen half it? Thanks to Fly and Michelle and Riley for showing me around. I tried to tell myself to ease into skiing a little but when its dumped around 70cm it hard not to get excited. At the bottom of some runs I feel like crying my legs are so tired.  It’s a bit of a maze finding your way to some of the terrain through the trees but I’m starting to find my way around a little.  The snow that’s fallen has on not too much of a solid base, so there are still some hazards you have to look for…..small trees for example and  a few sharky rocks. Revelstoke is an awesome little ski town with a rad crew of locals and also quite a few Kiwis. I’m looking forward to taking some photos but for now I’m not going to waste this snow with a camera in hand. I have however got out my new Go Pro for a few runs and edited them up with some sequences I took over the last couple of weeks. I’ve not used Final Cut Pro for a few years so its been fun learning how again…..so here you are, check out my first effort below.

snow….

Snow is good. and it’s snowing.

Living 1 minute walk to town but with really only two neighbours in such a cool town makes me feel pretty lucky. The old dude that lives here is super friendly along with everyone else in Revelstoke. The butcher tells me he skied over 1,100,000 vertical feet last season (thats over 300km vertical) or about 500 laps top to bottom at t.c. I hope I ski that much. I guess it makes it easy when the local mountain has 1,713 metres vertical. Still waiting for mountain to open…………………………………………………………………

Fun with icicles and dinner with kiwi. There are quite a few of us here it seems……

My flatmate and I went for a ski down our road after a few wines. My first 13.2 meters vert this season.

Revelstoke

Just cruising in Revelstoke at the moment, not much action, waiting for the hill to open which happens on friday…. just a few pics from the house and around town. Love having a big heavy camera again, was feeling a little under compensated there for a while! ha. Also been playing with a few time lapses which I might put up soon.

Vancouver

Blogging, not ever been good at it, but since I’ve stopped taking photos I decided that my trip away would be the return of photo taking times and to celebrate I bought myself a new camera (a Nikon! d7000) which I have to say, for some reason I love?  never thought I would move from canon but I figure the person that stole my 7d was trying to tell me something and I also made a new blog which is supposed to motivate me to take more photos….First photos are really just some snaps of what I’ve seen around me so far, (mostly from hotel balcony haha)  this is my first real post the previous two being stolen from other people, but if you haven’t watched them you should, both inspiring short films, one is a preview actually, but whatever, its good — All I can makes me dream of getting to revelstoke. can’t wait.
